Sugar came to us from a reservation where she had been living as a "country dog". Sugar is a very gentle, quiet dog who is a little unsure of herself in new situations. She loves people and seeks out attention and affection from them. Sugar hasn't shown a lot of interest in toys or balls but likes to explore the smells outdoors. She doesn't appear to have much experience being indoors, but is learning to get used to new surfaces, sounds, etc. Sugar kept her kennel clean and is crate-trained, although she needs some good motiviation to get into it. She gets along well with other dogs and cats.

Sugar is participating in our Rush to Rescue program, so she is currently being fostered by a pair of offenders at the Rush City Correctional Facility. While there, she will be attending a training program with a certified trainer and will be working on her commands with her handlers.

Update from Sugar's handlers: A beautiful blonde lab with all the traits that a blonde lab is expected to have. Sugar is an oversized lap dog. She is content with lounging around, being petted or even just being by you. She does not like loud noises or voices and can become frightened easily. Sugar does not hold onto being frightened too long. She will be back to her happy, inquisitive self as soon as she sees there is no danger. I am working on the kenneling issue with her. She is hesitant to go in unless there is a clear path with no obstacles in the way. Once inside and told to stay, or blocked for a quick second, she will stay standing, then you have to reassure her that she is okay and get her to sit. After that, she will stay without the door closed. Eating is sometimes an issue. If you feed her by hand a couple of scoops over her bowl, she will eventually eat her food. She is not a big beggar. I have never heard Sugar bark. She has nightmares almost every night and she cries. I usually wake her by rubbing her forehead or side and calming her down. All around happy, gentle, quiet dog that loves contact. Listens and learns. She's not the quickest learner, but with patience, she does well.
